State Farm announced Wednesday that starting next week it will begin hiring its first 500 people to work in downtown Tacoma.
The company will host a job fair Tuesday and Wednesday at the Hotel Murano for claim handling and processing jobs that ?focus on customer service,? company spokesman Brad Hilliard said in an email.
Applicants should visit statefarm.com/careers to fill out an application, then come to the job fair prepared to interview with recruiters and department managers. College degrees are not required, Hilliard said.
State Farm announced in late April its plans to expand its operations to downtown Tacoma. It said it initially would hire about 300 people and ultimately employ 1,100 people here.
The company will open a claims center this fall in 300,000 square feet once occupied by Russell Investments, which left town in 2010 after three generations in Tacoma. The insurance company will occupy all of the former Russell headquarters at 909 A St., as well as four floors in the Columbia Bank Center at 1301 A St.
Online job postings indicate State Farm is looking for 263 people to work as claims associates in a so-called Express area, which will be at the Columbia Bank Center. Work there will begin Sept. 30.
The former Russell Investments headquarters will house the company?s Initial Loss Reporting center, which is part of the company?s national reorganization. Some 235 people will begin work there on Nov. 4.
Both job postings indicate the operations are 24 hours a day, and that people will be expected to work some nights and weekends. Candidates aren?t required to have a college degree for either job.
