UK gives new details of mass surveillance plan

LONDON (AP) ? U.K. authorities are revealing new details of an ambitious bill which would track electronic conversations of every single U.K. resident.

The proposed mass surveillance law would collect detailed information about the private communications of millions of Britons, a step the government insists is necessary to fight terrorism and crime.

Home Secretary Theresa May says the program will not snoop on the content of the conversations. But data mining experts say that even electronic communications logs can yield detailed insights about people's lives at the stroke of a key.

Lawmaker David Davis, who opposes the plan, told BBC radio that the program would gather a "huge amount of information" and be deeply intrusive.

Details of the bill were in the process of being presented to lawmakers Thursday.
