The stress and strain of constantly being connected can sometimes take your life -- and your well-being -- off course. GPS For The Soul can help you find your way back to balance.

GPS Guides are our way of showing you what has relieved others' stress in the hopes that you will be able to identify solutions that work for you. We all have de-stressing "secret weapons" that we pull out in times of tension or anxiety, whether they be photos that relax us or make us smile, songs that bring us back to our heart, quotes or poems that create a feeling of harmony, or meditative exercises that help us find a sense of silence and calm. We encourage you to look at the GPS Guide below, visit our other GPS Guides here, and share with us your own personal tips for finding peace, balance and tranquility.

In his GPS Guide below, Dr. Steve Rosenberg guides you through a sole-soothing, stress-relieving foot practice that will restore the balance within your soul.

  • Close your eyes and kick your shoes off and take slow, easy, deep breaths. Visualize walking on the soft sand and flexing your toes into the sand with each step.

  • Feel the warmth of the sun beating on your face. Imagine your feet cooling down and feeling refreshed. ??

  • Feel the cool water refreshing your whole body on a hot summer day.

  • Visualize all the muscles in your legs and feet moving in synchrony.

  • Breathe slowly and deeply and feel the blood rushing throughout your entire body.

  • Feel your feet connected to the ground and the muscles in your body relaxing. Spread your toes and wiggle them around.

  • Roll your feet back and forth starting from heel to toe. Feel the muscles in your arch slowly stretching and relaxing.

  • Elevate your leg then bend and flex it at the knee. Point and stretch your toes pushing the heel out as far as you can.

  • Stand up, flex your knees, bend over and touch the ground with your hands. Straighten your legs bend over and try and touch the ground with your hands. Hold each stretch for 30 seconds -- breathe slowly and deeply.

  • Place one knee over the other and hold your foot with both hands. Using your thumb massage the arch of your foot, starting at the heel and ending at the toes.

  • Grab each individual toe gently and rotate it clockwise and counter-clockwise. Visualize your feet floating and all the muscles relaxed.

The Engadget Interview: Qualcomm's Rob Chandhok on the Internet of things at MWC 2013

The Engadget Interview Qualcomm's Rob Chandhok on the Internet of things at MWC2013

Few people understand the Internet of things better than Rob Chandhok -- president of Internet services at Qualcomm -- and we had the chance to sit down with him in Barcelona after our interview with Raj Talluri. We chatted about AllJoyn, a set of open source services which the company just revamped to incorporate a simple notification protocol -- an "SMS for things" -- small and durable enough to be useful for the life on an appliance, like a fridge or a washer. This provides a universal mechanism for notification and control, such as WiFi on-boarding, for example. He also mentioned AllJoyn audio, a streaming protocol that Qualcomm and DoubleTwist collaborated on. We then discussed various approaches and network topologies for building the Internet of things, such as IPv6-connected products with cloud-based logic vs. devices on local area networks that interact with the Internet via gateways (something that's prevalent in modern home automation). Check out the full interview video after the break.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? About 150 friends and family of Adam Strange wrote messages to him in the sand and stepped into the water Thursday at a New Zealand beach to say goodbye a day after he was killed by a large shark while training for an endurance swim.

Strange, 46, was an award-winning television and short film director and the father of a 2-year-old girl. He was swimming near popular Muriwai Beach on Wednesday when he was attacked by the shark that was possibly 14 feet (4 meters) long.

Police attempting to save him raced out in inflatable boats and fired gunshots at the enormous predator, which they say rolled away and disappeared. They couldn't confirm if they'd killed it. Police were able to recover Strange's body.

Muriwai and several nearby beaches remained closed for swimming after the fatal attack, one of only about a dozen in New Zealand in the past 180 years.

Friend Adam Stevens said the Thursday beach service was run by indigenous Maori who removed the "tapu" or spiritual restriction at the beach. He said it was a "perfect tribute" to a man who spent much of his time swimming and surfing.

"He was a very robust, big, barrel-chested surfer," Stevens said. "He was basically completely obsessed with the ocean, with paddle boards and body surfing, everything. His garage was like a museum of surf craft."

According to Police Inspector Shawn Rutene, Strange was about 200 meters (650 feet) from the shore when he was attacked by a shark that police estimated was up to four meters (14 feet) long.

Stevens said his friend was planning to swim about 1 ? kilometers (one mile) Wednesday as he tested new goggles and trained for an annual endurance swim from Auckland to Rangitoto Island. The 4.5 kilometer (2.8 mile) swim takes place on Sunday.

"I surfed with him the day before," Stevens said. "He wasn't that pleased with his fitness level but was just getting into the right headspace and finding the motivation to get out there."

Pio Mose, who was fishing at the beach Wednesday, told the New Zealand Herald newspaper he saw Strange struggle against the huge shark. Mose yelled at Strange to swim to the rocks, but it was too late.

"All of a sudden there was blood everywhere," Mose said. "I was shaking, scared, panicked."

About 200 people had been enjoying the beach during the Southern Hemisphere summer at the time of the attack.

Stevens said he's been comforting Strange's wife Meg and their daughter since the accident. He said the girl is too young to understand what has happened but is aware of the emotions.

On his website, Strange says: "When I get a spare 5 minutes, I like to make a fruit smoothy, surf some big waves out on the West Coast, point my skis down a mountain with Meg, haul my mountain bike up and down a few hills, drink some pinot while scratching away at a film script ... If I get a spare 5 minutes ..."

Stevens said his friend, whom he's known about 15 years, was very creative and always positive.

"He lived in the moment brilliantly. It was completely infectious," Stevens said. "He feasted on the details."

Strange won a Crystal Bear award for best short film at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival.

Police did not say what species of shark was involved in the attack. Clinton Duffy, a shark expert with the Department of Conservation, said New Zealand is a hotspot for great white sharks, and other potentially lethal species also inhabit the waters.

Attacks are rare. Duffy estimated that only 12 to 14 people have been killed by sharks in New Zealand since record keeping began in the 1830s.

"There are much lower levels of shark attacks here than in Australia," he said. "It's possibly a function of how many people are in the water" in New Zealand's cooler climate.

He said that during the Southern Hemisphere summer, sharks often come in closer to shore to feed and to give birth, although that doesn't necessarily equate to a greater risk of attack.

"Ninety-nine percent of the time they ignore people," he said. "Sometimes, people get bitten."

Around the world, sharks attacked humans 80 times last year, and seven people were killed, according to the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File. The death toll was lower than it was in 2011 but higher than the average of 4.4 from 2001 to 2010.

Egypt opposition to skip polls over transparency | Morocco World ...

CAIRO, Feb 27, 2013 (AFP)

Egypt?s main opposition bloc has pulled out of elections due in April, expressing doubts over their transparency and rejecting a call from President Mohamed Morsi for dialogue.

With the gulf between the ruling Islamists and the opposition growing wider every day, US President Barack Obama told Morsi he had a ?responsibility to protect? the democratic principles advanced by an uprising in 2011.

?The decision of the Front, unanimously, is to boycott the elections,? National Salvation Front member Sameh Ashour told reporters in Cairo Tuesday after a meeting of the alliance, which groups mainly liberals and leftists.

?There can be no elections without a law that guarantees the transparency of the electoral process? without a real independence of the judiciary,? Ashour said as activists chanted slogans against Morsi?s Muslim Brotherhood.

The decision came after NSF demands, including the formation of a new government ?to save the country?, had been ignored, Ashour added.

Leaders of the opposition alliance have been locked in heated debate over whether to take part in the staggered parliamentary elections, members said.

Already on Saturday, Mohamed ElBaradei, former head of the UN atomic agency, Nobel Peace laureate and a prominent member of the Front, had issued his own boycott call, arguing it was necessary ?to expose sham democracy?.

The NSF also shunned a national dialogue event set up by Morsi to establish guarantees for fair and transparent elections.

?Of what guarantees can we speak today, while we have been refused an impartial government able to apply these guarantees?? said Ashour.

He accused the Brotherhood of wanting to ?politically kidnap Egypt, to monopolise its institutions and dominate all the state organs?.

Obama, in a statement issued after a phone conversation with Morsi, welcomed his ?commitment to serving as a president for all Egyptians, including women and people of all faiths?.

Obama ?emphasised President Morsi?s responsibility to protect the democratic principles that the Egyptian people fought so hard to secure?, the statement added, referring to the uprising that toppled autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak.

He urged all sides in Egypt to work ?to build consensus and advance the political transition?.

The White House also said Secretary of State John Kerry would visit Egypt on March 2.

Morsi argued his national dialogue was aimed at ensuring the elections would go ahead ?with the highest degree of transparency and impartiality?.

In remarks aired on television, he said the door was still open to those staying away.

Saad al-Katatni, head of the Brotherhood?s Freedom and Justice Party, and Yunes Makhyun, chief of the main Salafist party Al-Nour did attend the national dialogue event.

Katatni ruled out the formation of a new cabinet before the elections, arguing a ?change of government now would send a negative signal? with the country in the grips of a severe economic and political crisis.

Makhyun, whose party has tried to mediate between the government and the NSF, called for the formation of ?an impartial government accepted by all political parties?.

The Brotherhood and its Islamist allies won an overwhelming majority in the legislative polls in the winter of 2011 and 2012, but when a court found irregularities in the voting system, parliament was later dissolved.

The NSF organised massive protests against Morsi in November and December after he adopted now-repealed powers that shielded his decisions from judicial review.

But anti-Morsi protests have slowed since he pushed through an Islamist-drafted constitution in a December referendum. The mass rallies have given way to smaller, often violent, protests.

The opposition, less organised than the Muslim Brotherhood, insists the president appoint a new government before the election. The presidency says the new parliament should have the right to appoint the cabinet.

The election is scheduled to begin on April 27, with a new parliament to convene on July 6.

Fish discards ban 'may be diluted'

Plans for a total ban on the practice of discarding fish at sea are to go before Europe's fisheries ministers, with some fearing they will be diluted.

An outright discards ban is favoured by the European Commission and parliament, but it is being resisted by France, Spain and others.

Ministers will consider a compromise text, that a Commission source described as "acceptable".

It would delay fisheries reform beyond the current proposal of 2016-2019.

It would also allow maybe 7% of fish to be discarded, exempt some species from the ban altogether, and give fishing crews extra catch quotas for an interim period.

It would also allow blue whiting, one of the most abundant stocks of the North East Atlantic, to be dumped if it is inadvertently caught. Boarfish may also be exempt.

Some ministers are striving to soften the provisions of the reform package to protect their fleets from sudden change.

Hi-tech nets

But the Fisheries Commissioner, Maria Damanaki, urged ministers not to compromise.

"The politicians must listen to what the public is telling them," she said. "The public does not want fish to be just thrown away."

She said all caught fish should be landed; if they were of low value, they should be turned into fish meal.

The Irish Fisheries Minister, Simon Coveney, who is chairing the meeting, said: "It is imperative that European Fisheries Ministers collectively take this progressive but challenging decision now and co-operate in agreeing appropriate and effective measures to eliminate discards with ambitious timelines."

But he is obliged at the meeting to find a joint position that the Council can negotiate with the Commission and parliament - and compromise will be difficult as several nations, including the UK, consider than any slipping from a total ban would be wrong.

The "progressive" nations fear that any discussion of exempt species would open the door for further exemptions.

In a review of global discarding, the UN noted that the north-east Atlantic had the highest discard level in the world, estimated at 1.3 million tonnes - the majority attributed to the EU. The Commission estimates that 23% of all fish caught by EU vessels are discarded.

Discussions at the Fisheries Council may last into the night, although on a less contentious note, ministers are likely to re-commit to better technology to prevent unwanted fish being caught in the first place

Thousands jam St. Peter's for pope's last audience

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI greeted the Catholic masses in St. Peter's Square Wednesday for the last time before retiring, making several rounds of the square as crowds cheered wildly and stopping to kiss a half-dozen children brought up to him by his secretary.

Tens of thousands of people toting banners saying "Grazie!" ? "thank you" ? jammed the piazza to bid farewell to the pope at his final general audience ? the appointment he has kept each week to teach the world about the Catholic faith.

Pilgrims and curiosity-seekers picked spots along the main boulevard leading to the square to watch Wednesday's event on giant TV screens. Some 50,000 tickets were requested for Benedict's final master class, but Italian media estimated the number of people actually attending could be double that.

"It's difficult ? the emotion is so big," said Jan Marie, a 53-year-old Roman in his first years as a seminarian. "We came to support the pope's decision."

With chants of "Benedetto" erupting every so often, the mood was far more buoyant than during the pope's final Sunday blessing and recalled the jubilant turnouts that often accompanied him at World Youth Days and events involving his predecessor, Pope John Paul II.

Benedict on Thursday will become the first pope in 600 years to resign, a decision he said he took after realizing that, at 85, he simply didn't have the strength of mind or body to carry on. He will meet Thursday morning with cardinals for a final time, then fly by helicopter to the papal residence at Castel Gandolfo south of Rome.

There, at 8 p.m., the doors of the palazzo will close and the Swiss Guards in attendance will go off duty, their service protecting the head of the Catholic Church over ? for now.

Many of the cardinals who will choose Benedict's successor were in St. Peter's Square for his final audience, including retired Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony, object of a grass-roots campaign in the U.S. to persuade him to recuse himself for having covered up for sexually abusive priests. Mahony has said he will vote.

Vatican officials say cardinals will begin meeting on Monday to decide when to set the date for the conclave to elect the next pope.

But the rank-and-file in the crowd on Wednesday weren't so concerned with the future; they wanted to savor the final moments with the pope they have known for eight years.

"I came to thank him for the testimony that he has given the church," said Maria Cristina Chiarini, a 52-year-old homemaker who traveled by train early Wednesday from Lugo, near Ravenna, with some 60 members of her parish. "There's nostalgia, human nostalgia, but also comfort, because as a Christian we have hope. The Lord won't leave us without a guide."

Videogame review: Lara Croft is back in bold 'Tomb Raider' reboot ...

?I hate tombs,? Lara Croft sighs as she enters a musty crypt in Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics? bold reboot of the long-running series. The franchise had grown a bit musty in recent iterations, bogged down in clumsy shooting and silly supernatural elements like an evil Lara doppelg?nger, and distancing itself from the core experience of, you know, raiding tombs. Despite a string of solid if unspectacular efforts, Lara?s star had faded considerably, and Uncharted?s Nathan Drake largely supplanted her as gaming?s top adventurer, in gameplay and graphics ?until now. This new Lara has taken a page from Drake?s exploits and is officially reclaiming her throne.

In this new origin story, Lara is not a girl, not yet a woman when she is shipwrecked on a mysterious island. Separated from her crew and visibly scared, she is forced to grow up quickly when a murderous cult kidnaps her friends. Armed with a bow and arrow, she channels The Hunger Games? Katniss Everdeen in sheer grit and determination, gaining new weapons and abilities that open up the world as the game progresses in a nod to gaming?s first lady, Metroid?s Samus Aran.

The brutal island changes her, and voice actress Camilla Luddington (Grey?s Anatomy) gives a fully realized performance that sells Lara?s evolution from untested neophyte to warrior princess. She?s put through the wringer ? escaping burning buildings, getting tossed off cliffs and over waterfalls ? in a series of stunning set pieces that are as fun to play as they are to marvel at. The graphics are dazzling, zooming in close in tight corridors to show the emotion on her face, and then panning way out as she ziplines off a mountain, flaunting the game?s impressive scope and size.

The greatest improvement is in the game?s combat sequences. In past games, Lara would lock onto an enemy and then blast away with her trademark dual pistols, and it felt very disposable. But this game?s enemies are much smarter, rushing her, flanking her, and throwing explosives to keep her constantly scrambling for cover. While she gains access to several guns, the bow and arrow is most satisfying, as Lara can use it to silently pick off enemies from a distance or arm it with fire or explosive tips to make things go boom.

When not fighting crazed cultists, exploring the island is just as entertaining thanks to the rock-solid platforming system, which has Lara leaping across chasms and clinging to the sides of mountains. Hunting animals (sorry, Bambi!) and finding salvage rewards the player with XP that is used to upgrade weapons and unlock new abilities that prove invaluable. The titular tombs exist as optional side missions that are absolutely worth seeking out, since they contain clever physics-based puzzles that provide a nice reprieve from the campaign?s breakneck pace. Lara may hate tombs, but gamers are going to love them ? and her ? all over again. A?

The 5 Most Effective Online Markreting Tools | Content for Reprint

Author: Michael Griffiths | Total views: 134 Comments: 0
Word Count: 765 Date:

With the advent of computer technology, it would be a waste if you, a business owner, did not avail of all the benefits it can provide your company. You literally have control at the tip of your fingers! Just imagine - wherever there is internet, you can potentially have a market.

But to be a good marketer, you must be aware of the best and most effective online marketing tools to maximize the fruit of your efforts. To determine which ones are good, you must put yourself in the shoes of your prospective customers. In fact, any marketer needs to think from the perspective of his/her potential customers in order to devise the best marketing strategy or apply effective marketing tools. Thinking from the point of view of the customers is not a marketing tool, but it is a marketing tactic.

So which marketing tools have you often used? Which ones have caught your attention, and enticed you into making a purchase? Here are the top 5 tools which result in the most sales.

Keywords. Think about it - when you are searching for something on the internet, what do you do? Do you not open a search engine and type in the keywords of the items you are searching for? This why as marketer, one of the best ways to get noticed is by investing in the services of an SEO company, and then getting your site noticed through the use of keywords. Keywords alone won't do it - because we're pretty sure there are thousands of other businesses selling "shoes" or "financial advice" out there. An SEO specialist can help you get your link in the first page of any search. Remember that it is very rare for potential clients to search beyond the first 8 links on a search. You therefore need as much help as you can get. Consult with an SEO and get your cash registers moving!

Article Marketing. Articles prove to be great internet marketing tools because you are able to explain in length important information which a simple advertising tagline cannot. Small businesses love this tool because when they submit articles to various websites (for a fee, or as part of a mutually-beneficial tie-up) and their products and services publicized. Aside from imparting valuable information, articles can also have imbedded links that directly transport the reader unto the actual website of any business.

Blogs and Forums: Blogs and forums give the businesses opportunities to interact with their target customers. Through blogs, they can create awareness about their products and services among their customers. Forums serve as platforms for discussions, whereby marketers can interact with their potential customers. Blogs, especially when well written, have a tendency to attract a steady set of followers. These are all potential clients who eagerly await each and every new blog posted. It's like having your customers with you every step along the way. For as long as you produce quality content, you will always have loyal followers - which you can later on convince to buy your products.

Emails. Small businesses love sending emails because they can promote their businesses to enhance sales. Aside from its advertising and promotional potential, emails also can serve as measuring instruments of the effectiveness or willingness of clients to hear more about your product. When you are sent a "Please stop sending us emails. We already have a tie-up with a financial advisor" response, then you know that it's time to move on with other customers who will be more willing to avail of your services. Less wastage of time. Effort and money.

Social Networks: Existing social networks are popularly used for business promotion. In fact, Facebook already has Facebook Business Pages. Businesses aim at increasing brand awareness by spreading their message through social networking websites. What makes it so popular and accepted by the public? The social interaction feature of social networking makes it possible for customers to actually converse with the business owner - and we all know how good this makes a customer feel. It's like enjoying customer services virtually. Even when you are behind a monitor, this personalization possibility is precious, and still welcome, thus making social networking extremely popular and effective.

Depending on your need, you can opt for the most suitable form of internet marketing. The trick is to entice customers with services and products that match all your glorious claims - that's the real secret behind effectiveness of any internet marketing strategy.

(AP) ? With billions of dollars at stake, the trial to figure out how much more BP and other companies should pay for the nation's worst offshore oil spill began Monday with the federal government saying the oil giant was mostly to blame for a disaster caused by putting profits ahead of safety.

Justice Department attorney Mike Underhill said BP PLC, which leased the rig and owned the blown-out Macondo well, said the disaster resulted from the London-based company's "culture of corporate recklessness."

"The evidence will show that BP put profits before people, profits before safety and profits before the environment," Underhill said during opening statements.

Eleven workers died when the rig exploded April 20, 2010, and millions of gallons of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico. U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier is hearing the case without a jury and ? barring a settlement ? will decide months from now how much more money BP and other companies involved in the ill-fated drilling project owe for their roles in the environmental catastrophe.

"Despite BP's attempts to shift the blame to other parties," Underhill said, "by far the primary fault for this disaster belongs to BP."

Attorney Jim Roy, who represents individuals and businesses hurt by the spill, said BP executives applied "huge financial pressure" on its drilling managers to "cut costs and rush the job." The project was more than $50 million over budget and behind schedule at the time of the blowout, Roy said.

"BP repeatedly chose speed over safety," Roy said, quoting from a report by an expert who may testify later.

Brad Brian, a lawyer for rig owner Transocean Ltd., said the Swiss-based drilling company had an experienced, well-trained crew on the rig. Brian said the Transocean workers' worst mistake may have been placing too much trust in the BP rig supervisors on the rig.

"And they paid for that trust with their lives," Brian said. "They died not because they weren't trained properly. They died because critical information was withheld from them."

Lawyers for BP and Halliburton, the cement contractor that constructed the cement barrier to prevent oil or gas from flowing up the well, will outline their cases later Monday.

Roy said the spill also resulted from rig owner Transocean Ltd.'s "woeful" safety culture. He said the owner of the Deepwater Horizon rig failed to properly train its crew, calling it a "chronic problem allowed by Transocean management to go uncorrected."

"The work force was not always aware of the hazards they were exposed to," Roy said. "They don't know what they don't know."

Roy also said Halliburton deserved some of the blame for providing BP with a product that was "poorly designed, not properly tested and was unstable."

Underhill heaped blame on BP executives and onshore managers for cost-cutting decisions they made in the months and weeks leading up the disaster. He said the primary "rig-based" cause of the blowout was a botched safety test in which two BP rig supervisors, Robert Kaluza and Donald Vidrine, disregarded abnormally high pressure readings that should have been glaring indications of trouble.

Underhill said Vidrine and Mark Hafle, a BP engineer in Houston, discussed the test results over the phone less than an hour before the explosion but failed to take steps that could have prevented the blast.

"Instead, both men, armed with knowledge that could have saved 11 lives and prevented the Gulf oil spill, did absolutely nothing," Underhill said.

Kaluza and Vidrine have been indicted on federal manslaughter charges. Hafle hasn't been charged with wrongdoing.

BP has said it already has racked up more than $24 billion in spill-related expenses and has estimated it will pay a total of $42 billion to fully resolve its liability for the disaster.

But the trial attorneys for the federal government, Gulf states and attorneys for people and businesses hope to convince the judge that the company is liable for much more.

Hundreds of attorneys have worked on the case, generating roughly 90 million pages of documents, logging nearly 9,000 docket entries and taking more than 300 depositions of witnesses who could testify at trial.

"In terms of sheer dollar amounts and public attention, this is one of the most complex and massive disputes ever faced by the courts," said Fordham University law professor Howard Erichson, an expert in complex litigation.

Barbier has promised he won't let the case drag on for years as has the litigation over the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill, which still hasn't been completely resolved. He encouraged settlement talks that already have resolved billions of dollars in spill-related claims.

In December, Barbier gave final approval to a settlement between BP and Plaintiffs' Steering Committee lawyers representing Gulf Coast businesses and residents who claim the spill cost them money. BP estimates it will pay roughly $8.5 billion to resolve tens of thousands of these claims, but the deal doesn't have a cap.

BP resolved a Justice Department criminal probe by agreeing to plead guilty to manslaughter and other charges and pay $4 billion in criminal penalties. Transocean reached a separate settlement with the federal government, pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge and agreeing to pay $1.4 billion in criminal and civil penalties.

But there's plenty left for the lawyers to argue about at trial, given that the federal government and Gulf states haven't resolved civil claims against the company that could be worth more than $20 billion.

One of the biggest questions facing Barbier will be to determine if BP was guilty of gross negligence.

Under the Clean Water Act, which is designed to punish companies and prevent future spills, a polluter pays a minimum of $1,100 per barrel of spilled oil; the fines nearly quadruple to about $4,300 a barrel for companies found guilty of grossly negligent behavior, meaning BP could be on the hook for nearly $18 billion.

BP, meanwhile, argues the federal government's estimate of how much oil spewed from the well ? more than 200 million gallons ? is inflated by at least 20 percent. Clean Water Act penalties are based on how many barrels of oil spilled.

Barbier plans to hold the trial in at least two phases and may issue partial rulings at the end of each. The first phase, which could last three months, is designed to determine what caused the blowout and assign percentages of blame to the companies involved. The second phase will address efforts to stop the flow of oil from the well and aims to determine how much crude spilled into the Gulf.

The Deepwater Horizon rig blew up 50 miles off Louisiana in an explosion that investigators blamed on time-saving, cost-cutting decisions by BP and its drilling partners in cementing the well shaft.

Following several failed attempts that introduced the American public to such industry terms as "top kill" and "junk shot," BP finally capped the well on the sea floor after more than 85 days.

By then, the well had spewed an estimated 172 million gallons of crude into the Gulf, fouling marshes and beaches, killing wildlife and closing vast areas to fishing.

Scientists warn that the spill's full effect on the Gulf food chain may not be known for years. But they have reported oil-coated coral reefs that were dying, and fish have been showing up in nets with lesions and illnesses that biologists fear could be oil-related. Oil churned up by storms could be washing up for years.

Chromebook Pixel review: another impractical marvel from Google

DNP Chromebook Pixel review another impractical marvel

We've had a bit of a love / hate relationship with the Google Chromebook since the first one crossed our laps back in 2011 -- the Samsung Series 5. We loved the concept, but hated the very limited functionality provided by your $500 investment. Since then, the series of barebones laptops has progressed, and so too has the barebones OS they run, leading to our current favorite of the bunch: the 2012 Samsung Chromebook.

In that laptop's review, we concluded that "$249 seems like an appropriate price for this sort of device." So, then, imagine our chagrin when Google unveiled a very similar sort of device, but one that comes with a premium. A very hefty premium. It's a high-end, halo sort of product with incredible build quality, an incredible screen and an incredible price. Is a Chromebook that starts at more than five times the cost of its strongest competition even worth considering? Let's do the math.

Montoya over jet dryer crash and dismal 2012

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? Forgive Juan Pablo Montoya if he doesn't find the fireball jokes very funny. He's just totally over them a year after crashing into a jet dryer during the Daytona 500.

The wreck in last year's race caused a raging inferno that stopped the event for two hours, and made Montoya an instant punch-line.

"People are dumb enough to think I hit the thing on purpose, like I really want to try and kill myself," said Montoya, who has a short fuse when asked about the crash that occurred when something broke on his car as he raced around the track under caution.

"That was a freak accident, and in a way, I was very, very lucky to walk away from that one. Not only myself, but the guy driving the jet dryer. To walk away with nothing out of that it was a miracle. I was glad it was over."

But it set the tone for yet another disappointing season that Montoya is eager to put behind him. Montoya finished 22nd in points last year with only two top-10 finishes all season, and since leaving Formula One midway through 2006, he's yet to find the success he'd been accustomed to his entire career.

The Colombian driver has had no consistency whatsoever in NASCAR. He's got just two Sprint Cup Series victories, both on road courses, and his 2009 berth in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship is his only appearance.

"It is not humbling. It sucks," he said. "It's not about humbling. I've won at everything I have been in, and I came to NASCAR and I've been good. I know I can do it. To run where we've run, it hasn't been fun."

It's been a constant battle at Chip Ganassi Racing to get Montoya and teammate Jamie McMurray running up front, and the team owner made wholesale behind the scenes changes before the 2012 season. But the performance never improved for either driver, and both Montoya and McMurray insisted change wasn't going to happen overnight.

After a full year, though, Montoya is determined to do his part off the track. He's working out harder than he ever did in F1, he said, and looks considerably slimmer. And he's clearly buoyed by driving the closing stint in the Ganassi team's win last month in the prestigious Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona sports car race.

Although it was Montoya's third Rolex win, he'd never before closed the race.

That was a confidence booster for a driver who perhaps has been tested by this rash of mediocrity.

"You always wonder 'Can I do anything different?' But even when you run good, you think about how you can make it better," he said. "It is hard. When the cars don't have enough speed, you can compensate for a little bit, but if they aren't good, they aren't good. I was telling someone the other day, we are not miracle workers. So you start trying different things, and sometimes you make more damage than help by trying different things.

"I think I'm a lot better driver than I was four or five years ago. I have not only the open-wheel experience, but the stock car experience. I understand how the races work. How everything is done."

Montoya is entering a critical year in his contract with Ganassi, whom he teamed with to win the 1999 CART championship and the 2000 Indianapolis 500. The owner holds an option on next season for Montoya, and it's possible their long relationship could be coming to an end.

But Montoya is adamant he wants to be with Ganassi, with sponsor Target and in NASCAR.

"I am committed to Chip and to Target. And, we are committed to make this work," Montoya said. "We're going to try to make this work. Chip is committed to it. He fired everybody ... he didn't think that was working and he needed new people, he hired new people. As everybody starts coming together, you kind of expect everybody to work perfect side-by-side from day one. But they have to understand, and understand the problem. One you understand the problems, then you can find solutions.

"The racing is still amazing. I still love it. I still love being here. But, when you're not running good, it's not fun. I don't think it is fun for anybody."

Belgian national killed in Mexican resort of Acapulco

ACAPULCO (Reuters) - A Belgian man was shot dead in Mexico's Pacific resort city of Acapulco on Saturday, the latest episode of violence to strike one of the country's most important tourist destinations.

Acapulco police spokeswoman Gloria Mendez said the man, 58, resisted two assailants who were attempting to steal his convertible Mercedes Benz, one of whom shot him in the chest.

The shooting took place just minutes away from the city's landmark Princess hotel, site of next week's Mexico Open professional tennis tournament. Many players have already arrived, including tournament star attraction Rafael Nadal.

Mexico's interior ministry had announced earlier on Saturday that police had captured a top Acapulco cartel leader, Ricardo Reza, late Friday.

Earlier this month, six Spanish women were raped when hooded gunmen forced their way into the beach house they had rented.

Drug-related violence has been on the rise in Acapulco and last year the city was Mexico's murder capital.

Snow, freezing rain to lash New England through Sunday

The Midwest digs out as punishing winter storms push eastward. NBC's Jay Gray reports.

By Craig Giammona, Writer, NBC News

Parts of New England braced for snow on Saturday, with Boston prepared for a mix of snow and freezing rain in the third storm to rake the area in three weekends. The mix will likely make a messy end for a powerful storm system that headed eastward after slamming much of the Midwest with snow earlier this week, meteorologists said.

As many as 1 to 3 inches of snow could fall in Boston, with the heaviest snowfall expected between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

?I?m not thrilled that we?ve got more snow coming this weekend. I?ve had enough of winter,? Boston area resident John Bonnanzio, 54, told Reuters.

But other residents were ready to make the most of the coming storm.

?I?m excited,? Jesse Beecher, 29, told Reuters. ?I went out skiing in the streets during the last one, and I?ll do the same thing again.?

A winter weather advisory was set to go into effect for much of the region starting at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The storm system, which left much of the Midwest buried under snow, has the potential to cause flooding in the southeastern United States and was expected to bring precipitation to much of the east coast, including New York City and north into Massachusetts. The Weather Channel said parts of southern Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and northern and central Massachusetts could see up to 6 to 9 inches of snow over the weekend.

The massive storm system resulted in 570 flight cancellations on Friday, including 127 at Chicago?s O?Hare airport, Reuters said.

Meanwhile, a storm in the Pacific Northwest was expected to dump 2 to 3 feet of snow on the Cascade Mountains through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service. The weather service issued winter storm warnings for parts of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Utah on Friday.

Reuters contributed to this report.

FEU blanks La Salle anew, nabs UAAP women?s football title

By Celest R. Flores
INQUIRER.net

MANILA, Philippines ? Far Eastern University swept its finals series with La Salle to nab the UAAP season 75 women?s football title on Sunday.

The Lady Tamaraws blanked the Lady Archers anew, 2-0, in the clincher at the Moro Lorenzo Football Field in Ateneo Campus after a 5-0 blasting in game one last Thursday.

Barbie Sobredo, who was fittingly named the tournament MVP, found the back of the net on a penalty kick in the first half before Loreta Ladero doubled the lead in the 60th minute.

Sobredo also finished as the best striker, while Ladero, once again, the best midfielder of the season.

It was the second straight year that La Salle missed the mark in the title round, losing to University of Santo Tomas last season.

Are energy drinks safe for teens?

Energy drinks are available everywhere these days, and teens can't seem to get enough of them. Marketing campaigns target teens and young adults with bright, edgy packaging and sponsorship of high-energy sporting events like snowboarding and motocross racing. What's the big deal about a bit of extra caffeine?

How much is too much?energy drink

Most teens drink soda or coffee?? maybe even several over the course of a day. Caffeine has become an accepted way for many of us to perk up and grab some quick energy. Opinions vary on how much caffeine is safe for teens, but 250 milligrams is considered a moderate daily amount for adults. Ingredients in energy drinks may vary, but they generally contain caffeine plus other ingredients including guarana, which contains chemicals similar to caffeine and is also a stimulant.

Part of the concern with teens and excessive amounts of caffeine is that the beverages they are consuming provide little nutrition for their growing minds and bodies, and are often substituted in place of healthier options. Caffeine has an effect on various organ systems, including increases in heart rate and blood pressure. It can also cause dehydration, nervousness and an increase in anxiety in people with anxiety disorders.

ER visits are up

According to a survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), between 2007 and 2011, emergency room visits involving the consumption of energy drinks doubled ? from about 10,000 cases to more than 20,000 nationwide. The majority of these cases involved teens or young adults. While this is a small percentage of the total emergency room visits, the increase is cause for concern. Many of these emergency patients were combining energy drinks with alcohol or prescription drugs like Ritalin or Adderall, which are also stimulants.

Company fires back

Energy drinks pose potential health risks because of the stimulants they contain, and should never be consumed by children or adolescents.?-AAP

?

?

Monster Beverage Corporation released a statement against the SAMHSA report, stating that their claims do not support the conclusion that energy drinks are unsafe. Their statement reads in part, "Any causal connection between energy drink consumption and emergency room visits is further substantially weakened by the existence of other factors more likely to have been responsible for the patients' medical issues, such as the use of pharmaceuticals, alcohol or illegal drugs."

Should you allow your teen to drink energy drinks? In 2011, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a report stating that "energy drinks pose potential health risks because of the stimulants they contain, and should never be consumed by children or adolescents." Caffeine consumed in moderation may be fine for some teens, but excess consumption is not the best choice.

Judge denies Drew Peterson new trial, sentencing expected

By Kim Vatis and Lauren Petty, NBCChicago.com

After two days of witnesses, Will County, Ill., Judge Edward Burmila on Thursday denied a new trial for convicted wife murderer Drew Peterson.

The former Bolingbrook, Ill., police sergeant's current legal team argued Peterson should get a new trial, in large part, because Peterson's longtime lead attorney, Joel Brodsky, allegedly bungled the trial.

Much of a two-day hearing centered on a witness who was called by the defense but whose testimony ended up helping the prosecution.

Tom Gianni / AP

In this courtroom sketch, Drew Peterson, left, sits before Will County Judge Edward Burmila as his defense team sought to convince the judge to grant him a new trial at the Will County Courthouse in Joliet, Ill., on Wednesday, Feb. 20. The new trial was denied Thursday.

Burmila is expected to immediately sentence Peterson on his murder conviction. Peterson, 59, faces a maximum 60-year prison term.

In court Wednesday, retired judge Daniel Locallo, who was not connected to the case, testified that "it was not a reasonable trial strategy" for Brodsky to call divorce attorney Harry Smith to the stand during the murder trial.

Smith testified that Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, told him her husband killed his third wife, Kathleen Savio, and that he warned Stacy she had to tell someone. Several jurors said that bombshell testimony led them to convict Peterson.

"Now the jury was able to hear Stacy having conversations with Mr. Smith about it might be used in her leverage against Peterson," Locallo said, recalling how Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow called the testimony a "gift from God."

Peterson was?found guilty in September of murdering Savio. He is also a suspect in Stacy Peterson's 2007 disappearance but has not been charged in that case.

Also on NBCChicago.com:?Full coverage of the Drew Peterson murder trial

During Wednesday's hearing, the judge asked Greenberg why he and other attorneys hadn't objected to Brodsky's call to put Smith on the stand.

"You were saying (to Brodsky that calling Smith) was a death knell, a stake in the heart (of your case) ... and you didn't express that to the court?" Burmila asked Greenberg.??
?
Greenberg responded by describing Brodsky's alleged heavy-handedness, saying about his management of Peterson's six-person legal team, "It was a dictatorship, judge."
?
Sitting in an overflow courtroom listening to Greenberg's comment, Brodsky groaned and shook his head.?
?
"It's fiction. It's an absolute bald-faced lie," Brodsky told a reporter during a break in the proceedings. He also repeated his assertion that Greenberg and the rest of the attorneys had not opposed calling Smith.

Brodsky took the stand a day earlier but was not asked a single question about the decision to make Smith testify.

"The record is clear that it was a bad decision. We don't need to ask him his opinion because we don't care what his opinion is," said attorney Steve Greenberg.

Brodsky strongly refuted the notion that putting Smith on the stand was his decision alone.

"Not only did they support it, they realized it was the only move we could make, and I even have emails from (Steve) Greenberg not only approving Smith being called, but actually suggesting a question or two that I ask him," Brodsky said.

To bolster their case, Greenberg and his colleagues on Tuesday called a court watcher who testified she overheard Greenberg pleading with Brodksy in a hallway to not put Smith on the stand.

"We need him,"?she remembered Brodsky replying.

"I don't know short of laying down in the courtroom and throwing my body around the feet of Harry Smith what more I could have done,"?Greenberg said outside the Will County Courthouse Tuesday.

Also on NBCChicago.com:?Sentencing up next in Jackson family saga

Legal experts say blaming Brodsky is a longshot because Brodsky was one of five attorneys representing Peterson during the trial.

Brodsky's ethics were also called into question Tuesday by a legal professor who testified Brodsky shouldn't have hired a publicity agent for a possible book deal. Additionally, Brodsky admitted on the stand he received thousands of dollars for television licensing rights.

As he left court Tuesday, reporters asked prosecutor James Glasgow what he thought of one former trial colleague, Brodsky, being questioned by another, Greenberg. He responded that he'd never seen anything like it.

Brodsky and Greenberg have sparred in a bitter public feud recently. Brodsky left Peterson's legal team in November. But Greenberg is still on it. Greenberg initially told the judge that Brodsky didn't want to take the stand. But the judge said Brodsky had no right to refuse and ordered Brodsky to testify.

The families of both Stacy Peterson, who disappeared in October 2007, and Savio were also on hand for Tuesday's proceedings.

"I miss my sister terribly. I'm hoping that he gets what is coming to him and I?hope he gets the max,"?said Savio's sister, Susan Doman. "I definitely don't think that there is going to be a new trial. ... I'm not going to even go there."

[iPhone] Using google navigation via Siri question...

Quote:

Installed and works rather well. Looks like it might be a battery burner though. Not sure if its the app or the fact that I'm playing with nav and Siri.

Which tweak? AssistantLove? Jeff Benjamin swears by it and just recently did a big review on it. He didn't mention battery life. Sorry if I led you array. Stick with it for a little while and see how it plays out. It might be just cause ur using it so much. Sometimes these things settle down over time whether it be due to a recharge, respring/reboot, update, removal of a conflicting tweak, etc. If its bad on the battery try one of the others that are out there. Enjoy!
