Durham School Services union authorizes strike

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC)- The Durham School Services union approved the authorization of a strike Tuesday morning, but a spokesperson with Charleston County School District says they are not expecting any issues with their bus service.

Charleston County School District spokesperson Jason Sakran says the district is "not expecting any service interruptions of significant delays" following Tuesdays news. Durham School Services has provided the county with transportation since 2007.

Teamsters, the Durham School Services union, and Durham have three more bargaining sessions scheduled next week. A spokesperson for Durham says the sticking point is hourly pay for drivers.

The spokesperson says Durham has offered a pay raise, but the union says it is not enough.

According to a media release from Sakran, Charleston County School District is confident Durham will provide a backup plan in the event that things go south.

"If a strike is enacted, we expect Durham to develop a contingency plan that continues to provide qualified drivers who can safely transport our students," the statement read.

The release goes on to say the district has not been involved in the negotiation process, and they do not have first-hand knowledge about what the two sides are discussing.
