ROCKFORD ? With a couple of bounds off the rim, Rockford College?s hot streak to end the year turned cold.
Scott Suchy got good looks at a pair of 3-pointers that would have tied the game in the last 30 seconds but came up short on each, and the Regents watched as their comeback did the same.
Millikin got 26 points, including 7-for-12 shooting from 3-point range, from Trent Windemuller and pulled off a 78-75 win Saturday in Rockford.
?Somehow we were still in this until the end,? Rockford senior leader Grant Olsen (12 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 0 turnovers) said. ?We kept fighting, and we had a shot.?
Suchy missed the late 3s, but the junior transfer from Kishwaukee still finished with 20 points and seven rebounds. He also brought Rockford all the way back from a double-digit, second-half deficit, cutting it to one with under five minutes to play on his final trey of the day.
The Big Blue did not make a field goal in the final 1:49, and went 5-for-16 from the free-throw line in the game. But the Regents made 3-for-14 from long range in the second half, and they were unable to keep their recent surge alive.
Now Regent head coach Ryan Rebsom is hoping they can regain some of that momentum before 2013 arrives. Rockford, which closes out the year with a road game Monday in Joliet, won five of its past six to climb to .500 on the season headed into Saturday?s game.
?Yeah, well, we?ve been making steps. When this team is hitting its shots, we can beat anybody,? he said. ?But, even right now, we?re still an average defensive team, and we don?t talk enough, and we don?t do the things we have to do defensively to win these close ones.?
Women in title game
Rockford held off Spalding 66-62 for a road win that goes down as its second win of the season. Erin Ryczek posted 16 points and Lindsay Lengjak added 14 points as the Regents advanced to the DePauw University Tournament championship game at 5 p.m. today.
