Q&A with North Texas photographer Jack Palmer

(Rockwall) June 30, 2013 -Jack Palmer has always loved taking pictures of his surroundings: places, objects and people. At age 9, he began capturing images of the world around him. In 2007, he turned his passion into a profession.

From architectural, commercial, event and corporate photography to awe-inspiring landscape shots, many of Jack?s photographs document the history of North Texastowns ? especially the Rockwall area. His work can be seen adorning the walls of the Rockwall Area Chamber of Commerce, on company websites and brochures, and most recently, on display at the new Rockwall County Courthouse. We?re also featuring his work on the cover of our July/August print edition.

WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT?

My Christian faith, family and photography. I like to capture various aspects of the world around us that are gradually becoming things of the past: old structures, buildings, cars, tools. I have a high regard for history and tradition, and I want to preserve the memories by using my camera as a medium. I want my pictures to tell stories and to provoke a reflection on transience of life. I would also love to travel to shoot more fall and winter photos.

TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS.

A lot of what I do is website/Facebook marketing photos for local companies, architectural photos and commercial work. Small and large businesses seek out high-quality images to attract new customers. I?ve shot for Shenaniganz, Allure, the City of Rockwall, Royse City and Fate, hotels and auto dealerships, to name a few. I also take family and student portraits.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.

I have four sons and three grandchildren. My wonderful wife, Dorota, is also my photography assistant. I love family and my family of origin ? genealogy is important.

SUM UP WHY YOU DO WHAT YOU DO.

I am a true supporter of Rockwall and nearby towns. I want to provide images of our hometown that people are proud to share and send to family and friends outside the community. I am very thankful for my business clients, and I find joy in supporting them through my photos.

Obama tells leaders to follow Mandela's example

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? President Barack Obama encouraged leaders in Africa and around the world Saturday to follow former South African President Nelson Mandela's example of country before self, as the U.S. president prepared to pay personal respects to relatives who have been gathered around the critically ill anti-apartheid icon.

"We as leaders occupy these spaces temporarily and we don't get so deluded that we think the fate of our country doesn't depend on how long we stay in office," Obama said.

Obama spoke at a news conference with South African President Jacob Zuma in the midst of a weeklong tour of the continent that also included stops in Senegal and Tanzania. But many other African nations are embroiled in religious, sectarian and other conflicts.

Obama decided to avoid stopping in his father's home nation of Kenya because of international disputes there. The International Criminal Court is prosecuting Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta for crimes against humanity, including murder, deportation, rape, persecution and inhumane acts allegedly committed by his supporters in the violent aftermath of Kenya's 2007 elections.

"The timing was not right for me as the president of the United States to be visiting Kenya when those issues are still being worked on, and hopefully at some point resolved," Obama said. He noted he's visited Kenya several times previously and expects he will as well in the future.

Obama and Zuma appeared at the Union Buildings that house government offices and the site of Mandela's 1994 inauguration as the country's first black president after 27 years behind bars for his activism.

The 94-year-old Mandela has been in a nearby hospital for three weeks after being admitted with a lung infection. Zuma told reporters that Mandela is in critical but stable condition and the whole nation is praying that he will improve.

Obama visited with two of Mandela's daughters and eight of his grandchildren Saturday at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, part of the former president's foundation. Obama said he told the family he hopes Mandela draws comfort from the time he's spending with loved ones.

"I also reaffirmed the profound impact that his legacy has had in building a free South Africa, and in inspiring people around the world ? including me," Obama said in a statement after the visit. "That's a legacy that we must all honor in our own lives.

Obama also spoke by telephone with Graca Machel, Mandela's wife, while she stayed at his bedside in the hospital. Machel said she drew strength from the call and that Obama added a characteristic "touch of personal warmth."

"I am humbled by their comfort and messages of strength and inspiration, which I have already conveyed" to Mandela, she said.

The White House said that in accordance with the family's wishes, Obama was not planning to visit with Mandela.

In nearby Pretoria earlier, Obama revered Mandela as "one of the greatest people in history," referred to him by his clan name as he praised South Africa's historic integration from white racist rule as a shining beacon for the world.

"The struggle here against apartheid for freedom, Madiba's moral courage, this country's historic transition to a free and democratic nation has been a personal inspiration to me, it has been an inspiration to the world," Obama said.

"The outpouring of love that we've seen in recent days shows that the triumph of Nelson Mandela and this nation speaks to something very deep in the human spirit, the yearning for justice and dignity that transcends boundaries of race and class and faith and country," Obama said. "That's what Nelson Mandela represents, that's what South African at its best represents to the world, and that's what brings me back here."

Zuma told Obama he and Mandela are "bound by history as the first black presidents of your respective countries."

"Thus, you both carry the dreams of millions of people in Africa and in the diaspora who were previously oppressed," Zuma said, reading from a prepared statement.

On other topics, Obama declined to commit to supporting South Africa's bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. He said the U.N.'s structure needs to be updated and it would be "odd" for an expanded Security Council not to have African representation.

"How we do that and what fashion is complicated, it's difficult and it involves all kinds of politics," Obama said.

"Everybody wants a seat at the table, but when it comes time to step up and show responsibility, sometimes people want to be free riders," Obama said, adding he wasn't referring to South Africa specifically.

Zuma responded that he wishes the process of change at the U.N. would speed up.

Obama also said he wants to boost trade with Africa and plans to renegotiate an African trade pact to improve it for American businesses. He said he welcomes competition from other nations who have been aggressive in pursuing commercial opportunities in Africa, including China.

"I don't feel threatened by it. I think it's a good thing," he said. He added: "Our only advice is make sure it's a good deal for Africa." He said that includes making sure foreign investment employs Africans and doesn't tolerate corruption or take its natural resources without compensation for Africans.

Obama also is paying tribute to South Africa's fight against apartheid by visiting the Soweto area Saturday afternoon for a town hall with students at the University of Johannesburg. At least 176 young people were killed in Soweto township 27 years ago this month during a youth protest against the apartheid regime's ban against teaching local Bantu languages. The Soweto Uprising catalyzed international support against apartheid, and June is now recognized as Youth Month in South Africa.

The university plans to bestow an honorary law degree on the U.S. president.

Protesters under police watch demonstrated outside the university against Obama's record on surveillance and foreign policy. Demonstrators from a range of trade unions and civil society groups chanted, "Away with intelligence, away," holding posters depicting Obama with an Adolf Hitler moustache.

"People died in Libya. People are still dying in Syria," said 54-year-old Ramasimong Tsokolibane. "In Egypt, in Afghanistan in Pakistan drones are still killing people. So that's why we are calling him a Hitler. He's a killer."

Obama has been trying to inspire the continent's youth to become civically active and part of a new democratically minded generation. Obama hosted young leaders from more than 40 African countries at the White House in 2010 and challenged them to bring change to their countries by standing up for freedom, openness and peaceful disagreement.

Obama wraps up his South Africa stay Sunday, when he plans to give a sweeping speech on U.S.-Africa policy at the University of Cape Town and take his family to Robben Island to tour the prison where Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years behind bars.

Obama has visited the island before, but said it's a particular privilege to bring his daughters back to learn its lessons.

The Apple iPhone celebrates its 6th anniversary today

Did you know? Apple?s legendary iPhone, arguably the first Smartphone in the world, turns 6 today.

Apple iPhone 2007

Phew, it?s been a long time since the introduction of the original iPhone. With the first full-touch Smartphone, Apple revolutionized the industry by churning out the first of, now uncountably many, the new Smartphone breed. Also, the company single?handedly changed the fate of US carriers by introducing the ?contract? regime, which was adopted since it allowed everyone to buy an iPhone ?on-contract? for as little as $299. Without AT&T?s contract, you would have had to shell out $499 for the Apple iPhone 4 GB, released on the 29th of June, 2007.

A quick recap of what the original iPhone packed on the inside:

  • 3.5-inch HVGA (480 x 320) Display
  • 412 MHz Single Core ARM11 CPU
  • PowerVR SGX Lite GPU
  • 128 MB RAM
  • 2 MP Fixed Focus Rear Camera
  • 2G Connectivity Only
  • 4/8 GB Internal Storage

Apple iPhone 6 years anniversary

Seems like something right out of the dinosaur era now. With the iPhone, iPhone 3G and 3GS, the company made rapid strides and stole hearts (and won sales) along the way. The introduction of the iPhone 4, in my opinion, was the most exciting yet. A brilliant new industrial design, excellent display and a zippy OS paved the way for the modern iOS operating system and the latest iPhones. Since then, the company hasn?t exactly been on the brim of innovation. Apple products are losing shine, they need to do something big, and iOS 7 is the first step towards realization of their new goal, recapture the market (from the growing army of droids).

Oh well? Memories? We are already aware that the iPhone 5S won?t bring about a revolution. Let?s hope it does come with the iPhone 6 though, or it might just be too little too late.

Exploding Bullets Frozen In Plexiglass Are Hauntingly Beautiful

Just because a piece of glass might claim to be "bulletproof" doesn't necessarily mean that it's actually, well, bulletproof. But if your bullet-resistant glass is sturdy enough, that speeding bullet will usually just end up lodged in layers of polycarbonate. That's what intrigues photographer Deborah Bay.

Father of NSA leaker says he would return to US

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The father of NSA leaker Edward Snowden acknowledged Friday that his son broke the law but doesn't think he committed treason.

"If folks want to classify him as a traitor, in fact, he has betrayed his government. But I don't believe that he's betrayed the people of the United States," Lonnie Snowden told NBC's "Today" show.

Snowden said his attorney has informed Attorney General Eric Holder that he believes his son would voluntarily return to the United States if the Justice Department promises not to hold him before trial and not subject him to a gag order, NBC reported.

The elder Snowden hasn't spoken to his son since April, but he said he believes he's being manipulated by people at WikiLeaks. The anti-secrecy group has been trying to help Edward Snowden gain asylum.

"I don't want to put him in peril, but I am concerned about those who surround him," Lonnie Snowden told NBC. "I think WikiLeaks, if you've looked at past history, you know, their focus isn't necessarily the Constitution of the United States. It's simply to release as much information as possible."

Lonnie Snowden declined to comment when reached Friday by The Associated Press.

Edward Snowden, who fled to Russia, is charged with violating U.S. espionage laws for leaking information about National Security Agency surveillance programs.

(AP) ? The State Department has identified the American killed in Egypt during violent clashes between government supporters and opponents.

State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf, traveling with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in the Middle East, says Andrew Pochter was killed Friday in Alexandria. The department has issued a warning advising Americans to defer nonessential travel to Egypt because of the continuing violence there.

Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, says in a statement on its website that Pochter was a 21-year-old student from Chevy Chase, Md., working in Egypt as an intern for a non-profit education organization.

The State Department says the young American was killed while photographing battles between supporters and foes of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi. Details were not available.

Peregrine Pharmaceuticals shares plummet

Shares of Peregrine Pharmaceuticals Inc. sank Thursday after the drug developer said it will stop studying a treatment combination involving its potential lung cancer drug bavituximab.

THE SPARK: The Tustin, Calif., company said a combination of bavituximab, carboplatin and a chemotherapy drug labeled paclitaxel did not produce a meaningful enough difference in overall survival in patients compared with carboplatin and paclitaxel alone. The company had just completed an analysis of data from a mid-stage study of the drug.

Peregrine said the combination involving bavituximab did produce an average overall survival of 14 months.

THE BIG PICTURE: Peregrine still plans to start a late-stage study by the end of the year of bavituximab combined with another chemotherapy drug, docetaxel. That combination will be delivered to patients with a form of lung cancer who have already tried another treatment.

Peregrine does not have any approved products, and bavituximab is its most advanced experimental drug. The company had more than $42 million in cash as of June 24. It said it has enough cash resources to fund operations for at least the next 12 months.

SHARE ACTION: Down nearly 25 percent, or 38 cents, to $1.17 in heavy trading Thursday morning, while broader indexes climbed about 1 percent. The stock closed Wednesday up 18 percent since the start of the year.

Google said to be developing game console - GamesIndustry.biz

The Wall Street Journal reported today that Google is developing an Android-powered game console, saying that "people familiar with the matter" have provided details to the newspaper. Google declined to comment. According to the WSJ, Google is "reacting in part to expectations that rival Apple will launch a videogame console as part of its next Apple TV product release." Apple also declined to comment on the matter.

Google would launch the device this fall, along with a second version of its Nexus Q media-playing device and an Android-powered smartwatch. The next release of Android, code-named Key Lime Pie, is said to give manufacturers like Samsung more freedom to use Android in devices beyond smartphones and tablets. Previously, while Google has allowed this to happen, manufacturers weren't allowed to use the Android name to promote such Android-based devices.

Google has been watching the release of Ouya, GameStick and GamePop to see how Android-powered consoles are being accepted. Certainly Google and other technology companies would not want to see Apple grab the lion's share of a new device marketplace, as Apple has done with the iPad. Releasing a Google console could be seen as a pre-emptive move to prevent that.

Apple has not been signaling any intentions to release an upgraded Apple TV that includes an App Store, but the newest version of iOS (iOS 7) does include support for game controllers. Apple stock has been taking a beating lately, as investors wonder if Apple can still introduce new category-defining hardware.

While these reports of possible game consoles from Google, Apple, and Amazon still fall into the category of rumors, it's worth noting that Google did hire veteran game designer Noah Falstein a few months ago. Why would they do that if they didn't have some interest in the gaming market?

(AP) ? The father of NSA leaker Edward Snowden acknowledged Friday that his son broke the law but said he doesn't think he committed treason, as the Obama administration renewed its calls to Russia to expel Snowden so he can be tried under the Espionage Act.

Meanwhile, Ecuadorean officials say Russian authorities have stymied the country's efforts to approve a political asylum application from the former National Security Agency systems analyst, according to government officials with direct knowledge of the case. Their accounts further complicate the already murky understanding of his current status.

In conceding his son's guilt, Snowden's father, Lonnie Snowden, told NBC's "Today" show that his lawyer had informed Attorney General Eric Holder that he believes his son would voluntarily return to the United States if the Justice Department promises not to hold him before trial and not subject him to a gag order.

"If folks want to classify him as a traitor, in fact, he has betrayed his government. But I don't believe that he's betrayed the people of the United States," Lonnie Snowden said.

Lonnie Snowden declined to comment when The Associated Press reached him Friday.

U.S. officials said their outreach to Russia, Ecuador and other countries where Snowden might travel to or seek refuge is ongoing.

"We continue to be in touch, via diplomatic and law enforcement channels, with countries through which Mr. Snowden might transit or that could serve as a final destination, also in touch, clearly, with the Russian authorities," State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell told reporters. "We're advising governments that Mr. Snowden is wanted on felony charges and should not be allowed to proceed any further, other than necessary to return to the United States. So we continue to make that active case through diplomatic and law enforcement channels."

Ventrell said the U.S. message to Russia has been consistent.

"We don't want this to negatively impact bilateral relations. It's understandable that there are some issues raised by this, but from our perspective, based on our cooperative history of law enforcement, and especially since the Boston bombings, that there's certainly a basis for expelling Mr. Snowden," he said, citing "the status of his travel documents and the pending charges against him."

The State Department revoked Snowden's visa last weekend.

Ecuadorean officials have said publicly they cannot start considering Snowden's asylum request until he arrives either in Ecuador or in an Ecuadorean embassy.

Two government officials with direct knowledge of the negotiations said Ecuador had been making detailed plans to receive and host Snowden.

One of the officials said those plans had been thwarted by Russia's refusal to let Snowden leave or be picked up by Ecuadorean officials. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the case by name.

Snowden intended to travel from Moscow with the intention of going on to the Ecuadorean capital of Quito but after he was held up in the Moscow airport, Ecuador asked Russia to let him take a commercial flight to meet Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino in Vietnam or Singapore, where Patino was on a pre-planned official trip, in order to be taken back to Quito by Patino, the official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak to the press.

The Russians rejected Ecuador's requests to let Snowden leave Moscow, or to let an Ecuadorean government plane pick him up there, the official said.

Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa told reporters on Thursday that Snowden was "in the hands of the authorities" in Russia.

But Russian authorities have said Snowden is outside Russian control in a transit area of the Moscow airport, which is technically not Russian territory.

Edward Snowden is charged with violating U.S. espionage laws for leaking information about NSA surveillance of Internet and telephone records to detect terrorist plots.

Gandolfini: A big man and everyman is eulogized

NEW YORK (AP) ? The funeral of James Gandolfini took place in one of the largest churches in the world and didn't stint on ceremony.

Still, the estimated 1,500 mourners who gathered Thursday in New York's Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine seemed part of an intimate affair. They came to pay their respects to a plain but complex man whose sudden death eight days before had left all of them feeling a loss.

During the service, Gandolfini was remembered by the creator of "The Sopranos" as an actor who had brought a key element to mob boss Tony Soprano: Tony's inner child-like quality.

For a man who, in so many ways, was an unrepentant brute, that underlying purity was what gave viewers permission to love him.

"You brought ALL of that to it," said David Chase in remarks he delivered as if an open letter to his fallen friend and "Sopranos" star.

Even though Gandolfini was indisputably a formidable man both on and off the screen, Chase also saw him as a boy ? "sad, amazed, confused and loving," he summed up, addressing his subject: "You could see it in your eyes. And that's why you are a great actor."

Susan Aston, who for decades was Gandolfini's dialogue coach and collaborator, spoke of how he wrestled to find truth in his performances.

"He worked hard," she said. "He was disciplined. He studied his roles and did his homework." But then, when the cameras rolled, his performance took over and, "through an act of faith, he allowed himself to go to an uncharted place. ... He remained vulnerable, and kept his heart open in his life and in his work."

The 51-year-old actor died of a heart attack last week while vacationing with his 13-year-old son in Italy. It was cruel end to a holiday meant to be part of a summer that Gandolfini was devoting to his family ? including his son and his 9-month-old daughter ? by even turning down a movie role, according to Aston, citing what she said was her final conversation with him.

Aston said he told her "I don't want to lose any of the time I have with Michael and Lily this summer."

The actor's widow, Deborah Lin Gandolfini, also spoke at the ceremony, as did longtime friend Thomas Richardson, who affectionately described Gandolfini as a man "who hugged too tight and held too long." But now facing a world without hugs from Gandolfini, Richardson invited the congregation to stand and share hugs with their neighbors.

"It is in hugging that we are hugged," he declared.

A private family wake was held for the actor Wednesday in New Jersey.

Broadway theaters paid tribute by dimming their lights briefly Wednesday night. Gandolfini was nominated for a Tony Award in 2009 as an actor in "God of Carnage."

For Thursday's service, celebrities and fellow actors helped make up the capacity audience.

Those from "The Sopranos" included Edie Falco, Joe Pantoliano, Dominic Chianese, Steve Schirripa, Aida Turturro, Vincent Curatola, Tony Sirico, Lorraine Bracco, Steve Buscemi and Michael Imperioli.

Others from the entertainment community included Julianna Margulies, Alec Baldwin, Chris Noth, Marcia Gay Harden, Dick Cavett and Steve Carell.

NBC News' Brian Williams was in attendance. So was New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

So was Saul Stein, 60, a resident of Harlem.

"I came to pay my respects today because he's a character I identify with, a family man," Stein said as he waited in line outside the church.

New Jersey accents were easy to hear among those hoping for a chance to get in. A few people spoke in Italian.

Of course, both New Jersey and Italian-Americans played a big part of "The Sopranos," which originally ran on HBO from 1999 to 2007.

Chase recalled a hot Jersey day early in the show's production that bonded him with Gandolfini ? with whom he shared Italian-American working-class roots ? for all times.

Waiting to shoot the next scene, Gandolfini was seated in an aluminum lawn chair with his slacks rolled up, black socks and black shoes exposed, and a damp cloth on his head in an effort to find some relief from the heat.

"I hadn't seen that done since my father used to do it, and my Italian uncle, and my grandfather," said Chase. "They were laborers in the hot sun of New Jersey."

"I was filled with love," Chase said, struggling to keep his composure, as he described the sight of Gandolfini in the broiling sun.

"I always felt we are brothers," he said, "based on that day."

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission is suing former MF Global CEO Jon Corzine for failure to supervise at the defunct firm.

In a statement, the regulator said it seeks to ban the former governor of New Jersey from working in the futures industry for his alleged role in the firm's bankruptcy 18 months ago.

The suit also targets the former treasurer of the company, Edith O'Brien, and alleges that MF Global misused funds prior to its collapse. The CFTC is asking for a $100 million penalty against the company.

MF Global collapsed in October 2011 under the weight of aggressive bets on sovereign debt, thin capital and questionable disclosures to investors. Customers were left reeling after it was revealed that more than $1 billion of their money could not be found.

Corzine is charged with violating his legal obligations to diligently supervise. O'Brien is charged with aiding and abetting the firm's misuse of customer funds.

Changing The Way We Use AC - Home Energy Pros

Aside from vacations, longer days and spending time in the great outdoors summer brings with it oppressive heat resulting in large segments of the population blasting the AC.

This often translates into long hours of high energy usage which, depending on how much its relied upon, has a tendency to become routine throughout the warmer months.

Since AC spikes power usage more than most other things in the home the combined usage of an entire population creates massive demand for electricity forcing power plants that run on fossil fuels to burn more. This in turn results in additional fumes which pollute the breathable airspace and on hot, hazy, and muggy days when the air is stagnant in urban areas a serious health threat arises to anyone with respiratory problems.

Nevertheless to get hundreds of millions of people in cities like San Diego or New York to suddenly cut back on air-conditioning?when it?s the only thing they feel brings relief from the heat isn?t an easy task. Sometimes state and federal weather agencies issue warnings about air quality and how one day will trump another in terms of temperatures and energy usage but the fact is most of the time the warnings don?t translate into much change in how AC is used.

It seems like when it?s warm outside we?ve learned to turn on the AC like we put milk in coffee (or sugar in tea if that?s what you prefer) and it?s become a routine, one that needs a little adjusting.

That being the case here?s a few points where we can make a difference in our AC usage and hopefully pass some of the tips on to others to do the same.

The AC unit itself

First of all it?s important to focus on the air-conditioning unit itself because whether its a window unit or central air system there are plenty of ways to save energy?while enjoying it. For instance:

  • If it?s a window unit make sure it?s sealed on all sides so air does not escape the room.

  • If it's a window unit and more than a few years old chances are it could be replaced for a better energy saving model.

  • In either a window unit or central air system changing/cleaning filters will provide better efficiency.

  • Put the AC on a timer so it?s not working when not necessary. A prime example is if you turn it on when going to sleep have it set to go off about an hour later.

  • Use the AC in the room you are in and not as a means to cool the entire home so if possible close the door to the room it?s in instead of letting it run all night.

Use fans

Cutting down on energy usage and trying to stay cool means using fans, particularly ceiling fans, as they utilize significantly less amounts of electricity. ?While they may not ?cool? the air like an air-conditioner they usually provide a comfortable breeze that for most people would pass the ?I need some relief? test.

Trying out a fan a little bit at a time is a great way for avid users of AC to wean themselves off the air-conditioning system.

Blocking the sun

Finally, it?s worth mentioning that the reason why people use AC is because its too hot in the home but if steps are taken to cut down on some of the outside influences which create that heat it may relax the need for the AC.

A prime example is blocking direct sunlight, especially when it?s at it?s strongest in the late morning and into the early afternoon.

This can be done easily by pulling down the shades or closing the curtains. A future investment could be planting a tree to provide better shade.

Interactive: Where do 700,000 displaced Syrians go?

The world population of refugees grew by nearly 100,000 people in 2012, according to detailed data the United Nations released last week, an increase driven in large part by the crisis in Syria. Separate conflicts in Mali and the Democratic Republic of the Congo combined to make 2012 the worst year for refugees in two decades.

Even this stark figure is misleading, however, because of a grim irony in the data: Of the more than 1 million people who fled Syria last year, about a quarter were existing refugees from Iraq returning to their native country. These Iraqis returning to their home country partially offset the 728,500 new refugees from Syria in the total figure reported by the U.N.

Turkey hosts the largest population of Syrian refugees with nearly 250,000, followed by Lebanon and Jordan. All told, Syria is now the country with the fourth-most total refugees?defined as those living outside their home country for fear of persecution?behind Afghanistan, Somalia and Iraq.

In the interactive map above, you can see where each country?s refugees are currently residing by clicking on that country or selecting it from the menu. To flip the scales and see which countries? refugees are currently in a particular nation, switch the blue button from ?Origin? to ?Host.? By default, every nation is shaded according to the number of refugees originating there.

Washington Redskins v Tampa Bay BuccaneersGetty Images

In their zeal to defend the name Redskins against disorganized and scattered opposition that gradually is becoming more organized and less scattered, the NFL team bearing that name has had a tendency to seize in knee-jerk fashion upon anything that supports the position that the name isn?t offensive.

The two primary tactics having entailed citing the various high schools that still use the name (there are fewer all the time) and trumpeting the opinions of Native Americans who have no problem with the name, and who ostensibly would regard as a compliment the greeting, ?What?s up, redskin??

As explained by Dave McKenna in an item published earlier today by Deadspin (yeah, I know that one of the morons who works there recently called me a moron . . . again), a supposed Native American Chief whom the Redskins recently trotted out in support of the name isn?t a Chief, and may not even be a Native American.? But the Redskins, who apparently have chosen to dispense with steps like vetting a guest, put the guy on their in-house web show, described him as a Chief, and had him explain why he supports the name.

And, yes, the guy actually said that Native Americans on the ?reservation? actually great each other with, ?Hey, what?s up, redskin??

Complicating matters for the league is that Commissioner Roger Goodell recently pointed to the same non-Chief-possibly-non-Native-American in a letter to member of Congress defending the ongoing use of the name Redskins.

The full item is worth a read, even though it?s a little lengthy.? Also, it probably should include a disclaimer that the author once triggered a defamation lawsuit from owner Daniel Snyder, which gives McKenna a natural bias.

But the point has been made.? Yet again, the Redskins end up looking bad while trying to make their name look good.

If nothing else, we now know why they?ve hired Frank Luntz.? Then again, maybe they think he?s a Chief, too.

S?o Miguel scops owl was wiped out after arrival of humans in the Azores

June 27, 2013 ? On S?o Miguel Island in the Azores, there used to exist a small, nocturnal bird of prey, related to the European scops owl, named Otus frutuosoi, which was very probably driven to extinction with the arrival of the first settlers in the 15th century. An international study, in which Spanish researchers participated, has for the first time identified fossils of this species endemic to the island.

On 28 August 2011 researchers Juan Carlos Rando, from the University of La Laguna (Tenerife), and Josep Antoni Alcover from the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies in Mallorca unearthed some small fossil bones buried not far below the ground of the ?gua de Pau cave (S?o Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal).

Two years later, an article published by the journal Zootaxa has revealed that the remains found belong to an extinct species of scops owl which has been given the name Otus frutuosoi in honour of the 16th-century Azorean historian Gaspar Frutuoso.

Carbon dating the fossils indicates that they are from 1,970 years ago. The hypothesis entertained by the researchers is that the arrival of human beings to the archipelago in the 15th century changed its ecosystem and caused the extinction of the species.

"Humans have a history of changing island ecosystems. When humans arrived on the island mice started to appear and laurisilva -- a type of humid forest -- was destroyed. This surely played a large part in the extinction of the S?o Miguel scops owl," Alcover explains.

Scops owls are nocturnal birds of prey, and this new species in particular is phylogenetically related to the Otus scops, or European scops owl, which with a length of 20 cm is the smallest nocturnal bird of prey on the Iberian Peninsular.

It is calculated that the wing surface of the Otus frutuosoi measured a maximum of 114 cm2, at least 33% less than the European scops owl, and although its legs were 11.6% longer, "the appearance of its body was more squat," according to the experts.

"The body of the extinct scops owl of the Azores was shorter and wider than that of its modern-day European relatives. Its beak was short and small, similar to that of the nightjar. Having long legs and very short wings, it must have been a very poor flyer and thus more of a land-dwelling bird," the scientist points out.

The second extinct scops owl on North Atlantic islands

A year ago, the same team of scientists documented another extinct bird of the same genus, although bigger, in Madeira: the Otus mauli.

Due to its anatomical features, the scientists believe that the Otus frutuosoi was an insectivore and must have lived on the ground of the laurisilva, where it would have found food and protection.

Otus frutuosoi remains have only been found on S?o Miguel Island in the Azores, therefore it is considered endemic to the island, although the authors do not discount the possibility of finding more fossils of the same species or other similar ones in various parts of the archipelago.

"The discovery of endemic scops owls in Azores and Madeira indicates that on occasions atmospheric conditions have occurred that have dragged these birds with them. Some reached safe land, where they survived and developed in isolated conditions, and new species formed," concludes Alcover.

Gay marriage ruling: Supporters celebrate

From California to New York and Florida, the gay community cheered the U.S. Supreme Courts ruling on Wednesday. Some looked forward to the benefits of having their same-sex marriages recognized federally, while others anticipated further obstacles.

With cheers, tears and kisses, gays and lesbians across the United States celebrated Wednesday's historic Supreme Court decision in support of same-sex marriage, which provided cause for joy after years of protest.

Crowds turned out in gay?capitals such as West Hollywood in California, San Francisco, South Miami Beach in Florida and the New York gay?bar called the Stonewall Inn, seen as the birthplace of the gay?rights movement.

"It's so wonderful being down here celebrating and not protesting for a change," Roger Silva, 69, said outside the Stonewall, grateful that a New York law allowed him to marry his partner of 11 years in April. "I never thought this would be possible in New York, much less the country."

In a landmark ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court forced the federal government to recognize same-sex marriages in states where it is legal and in a separate ruling it cleared the way for same-sex marriages in California.

Stonewall has become synonymous with gay?rights since a police raid there on June 28, 1969, triggered a spontaneous and violent demonstration that popularized the slogan "Out of the closet and into the streets."

A jubilant crowd of several hundred gathered on Wednesday afternoon, many carrying U.S. flags and the rainbow flags that have been adopted by the movement for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality.

At least one man had mixed emotions.

"There's a bit of wistfulness - if I was younger, at the bottom rung, to enjoy all those benefits. But yes it is a great day," said Bruce Ward, 55, a writer.

In San Francisco, where an outspoken movement carried the flag for gay?rights after Stonewall, about 100 clergy members from all faiths celebrated the two Supreme Court decisions outside Grace Cathedral atop Nob Hill.

Across town in The Castro, a neighborhood at the center of gay?life in the city, more than 2,000 people gathered in the street, many waving rainbow flags and equal signs. Dance music blared from loudspeakers and children bounced on the shoulders of their parents.

Down the California coast in West Hollywood, more than 1,000 attended a rally in which same-sex couples brought their children, joining young celebrants including a woman in a rainbow-colored ballet tutu and at least two in rainbow bikinis.

"It means that my daughters are never going to have to explain that their family is second-class," said Jason Howe, who arrived with his married partner Adrian Perez and their twin daughters, Olivia and Clara.

Added Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., who runs a popular celebrity blog under the assumed name Perez Hilton: "Today means that we have successfully educated America."

In South Beach, hundreds gathered at the LGBT visitors' center to celebrate and to declare that more work was left to be done, particularly in Florida, where a 2008 constitutional amendment outlawed same-sex marriages.

Amid hugs, kisses and congratulations, some people wished each other "Happy Pride Day" and "Happy Gay?Day."

"We have waited a long time for this ... We really cannot overstate how big a step forward this is," said Stratton Pollitzer, deputy director of Equality Florida.

Others engaged in legal discussions about the Supreme Court decision and the Florida law, with the common refrain that "we still have a long way to go."

Jack Tufano, 40, an architect, said he felt "relief" when the decision was announced "because my husband and I have been waiting" to get his U.S. citizenship. The two got married last year in New York.

"First thing we're going to do tomorrow is call the lawyer to get started," he said.

What happens when you take 200 Lumia 820s and pin them to a wall? You get a 12,000 x 6,400-pixel display, natch. This week at Build 2013 in San Francisco, Nokia and Microsoft teamed up to show this tiled monitor made of identical phones each running the same custom-built app. A master handset is used to control what's on the wall by communicating with each phone over WiFi (IP multicast). One demo was showing a massive animated grid of live tiles representing a selection of apps from the Windows Phone store. In another demo, the wall was displaying Bing Maps (using Here data) and being controlled interactively by the master handset. Take a look at our gallery below.

Senate on verge of historic immigration vote

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Senate stood poised Thursday to approve historic immigration legislation opening the door to U.S. citizenship to millions and promising a dramatic build-up of manpower and technology along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The vote on final passage of the White House-backed bill was expected as early as Thursday afternoon, after a series of test votes so far this week demonstrated supporters command a bipartisan majority well over the 60 votes needed to secure passage and send the bill to the House. First must come two more procedural tests set for Thursday morning.

"It's landmark legislation that will secure our borders and help 11 million people get right with the law," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said on the Senate floor Thursday ahead of the votes.

Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., countered that the bill doesn't ensure true border security since people here illegally can obtain a provisional legal status under the legislation before any security goals are accomplished. "This bill may pass the Senate today, but not with my vote. And in its current form, it won't become law," McConnell said.

Supporters posted 67 votes or more on each of three procedural tests Wednesday. More than a dozen Republicans sided with Democrats on each, ensuring bipartisan support that the bill's backers hope will change minds in the House.

The outlook there is uncertain. Many House conservatives oppose the pathway to citizenship at the center of the Senate bill. And many prefer a piecemeal approach rather than a sweeping bill like the one the Senate is producing.

The House Judiciary Committee is in the midst of a piece-by-piece effort, turning its attention Thursday to a bill on high-skilled workers.

On Wednesday the committee signed off on legislation establishing a system to require all employers to check their workers' legal status on a faster timeframe than the Senate bill contemplates. And last week it approved two other measures, one establishing a new agricultural guest worker program and a second making illegal presence in the country a federal crime, instead of a civil offense as it is now.

None of the bills weighed by the Judiciary Committee contemplate a path to citizenship or even legalization for the millions already here.

At its core, the legislation in the Senate includes numerous steps to prevent future illegal immigration, while at the same time it offers a chance at citizenship to the 11 million immigrants now living in the country unlawfully.

It provides for 20,000 new Border Patrol agents, requires the completion of 700 miles of fencing and requires an array of high-tech devices to be deployed to secure the border with Mexico. Those security changes would be accomplished over a decade and would have to be in place before anyone in provisional legal status could obtain a permanent resident green card.

Businesses would be required to check on the legal status of prospective employees. Other provisions would expand the number of visas for highly skilled workers relied upon by the technology industry. A separate program would be established for lower-skilled workers, and farm workers would be admitted under a temporary program.

The basic legislation was drafted by four Democrats and four Republicans who met privately for months to produce a rare bipartisan compromise in a polarized Senate. They fended off unwanted changes in the Senate Judiciary Committee and then were involved in negotiations with Republican Sens. John Hoeven of North Dakota and Bob Corker of Tennessee on a package of tougher border security provisions that swelled support among Republicans.
